POLICE launched a murder inquiry after the body of a man was discovered in a Hampshire city centre.

The body was found at a hostel in Winchester.

Police were called to an address in Sussex Street just before 7am on Sunday.

A neighbour who lives close to the hostel said she saw "masses" of police on Saturday night.

She said: "There were lots of police massed and they were shining a torch in the hall.

"I don't know what happened - I am 71 and thought I better stay out of it.

"I am shocked it has happened so close."

Another resident who lives in Andover Road said: "The fact it happened nearby was not a shock - it is awful whenever things like this happen."

There was no police activity around the area when the Daily Echo visited today.

Three men were arrested on suspicion of the murder of the man, believed to be in his 40s, who has not been named.

But they were later released without charge, said a police spokeswoman today.

The death of the man is now being treated as unexplained and police are investigating the circumstances.

A post mortem examination by a Home Office pathologist took place on Sunday.

The result of the post mortem was "unascertained", siad the police.

A police spokeswoman said this afternoon: "It will take some time to determine the cause of death due to the nature of the tests required.

"The post mortem concluded that there were no injuries that would have caused the death."
