TODAY, tens of thousands of people will pause to remember the fallen soldiers and pay their respects to those who gave their lives for freedom.

All corners of the county will stop for Remembrance Day during a two minutes silence marking the 98th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Remembrance Sunday commemorates the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, back in 1918.

The two-minute silence will take place 11am to remember the people who have died in conflict, initially in the first world war, however now the silence is used to remember all service men and women who have died in conflict.

The first two-minute silence was held one year after the end of the First World War when King George V asked the public to observe a silence at 11am.

This year marks 100 years since the Battle of the Somme.

Earlier this year actors from Southampton’s Nuffield paid tribute to the fallen in a specially commissioned event, which saw over 1500 voluntary participants dressed in First World War uniform appear unexpectedly in locations across the UK including Guildhall Square in Southampton.

Last month as reported by the Echo a huge stone monolith bearing iconic poppy designs was installed outside Romsey station to remember the victims of the Great War.

Students from Southampton have also been chosen to play a part in the national commemorations.

Teenagers from Bitterne Park School have been chosen as one of only three schools to be represented at the Western Front Association Annual Service of Remembrance at The Cenotaph in London yesterday.

The school was chosen because it had shown a particular interest in the ceremony and also by the way it remembers those who have lost their lives in conflict past and present.

All students who have a connection with relatives past and present are encouraged to bring in their relatives’ medals and wear them with pride.

Students who are involved in Army, Air or Sea Cadets, Scouts, Guides are also allowed to be in their respective uniforms for the whole day as a way of acknowledging those involved in the armed services.

Deputy headteacher, Pan Panayiotou said “This is a huge honour for the school and one in which we are very proud to be associated with.

“The Western Front Association who organise the Cenotaph Remembrance every year do an amazing job in helping to maintain the awareness of all those who have lost their lives in conflict”.
