AFTER losing their mother to breast cancer, two children have held a special event to raise money for The Haven.

Tommy, 14, and Lucy Bason, 10, lost their mum Sue in 2008 and are now raising vital funds for the cancer support charity.

On Monday August 22, with help from their stepmother Francesca Baring, a Pink Ponies event took place at the Woolpack Inn, Totford.

Visitors were welcomed to help turn as many ponies as they could pink with handprints, hoof painting and glitter – priced at £1 per go.

Children also took part in pony rides, priced at £2.

Ms Baring, owner of the Northington Stud and Stables, brought some of the yard's favourite ponies along with her to be painted.

Speaking about how she came up with the idea, Francesca said: "It is something I did before, but not for charity.

"Recently, (Tommy and Lucy) asked why don't we paint some ponies to raise money for The Haven. Lucy wanted to paint as many of the ponies pink as she could.

"They said that would be really good to do."

The breast cancer support centre offers exercise classes, supportive therapy and counselling to help people cope with the effects of the chemotherapy treatment.

It costs the centre £1,000 to support each person.

Francesca added: "Everyone really enjoyed themselves on the day and it was great that so much money was raised."

The family have already raised £1,000 for charity, but do not want to stop there.

Ms Baring says another event will be held in the near future.
