WINCHESTER City Council is conducting essential maintenance at Chesil multi-storey car park, starting on Monday, August 8.

Resurfacing work is necessary on the decks of the car park, which is located off Barfield Close.

The works will begin on the decks of floors 1 and 2 but the car park will be in use throughout the works with parking to floors 3 and above.

Ninety-nine bays out of a total of 598 standard bays will be affected.

A letter has gone out to local residents and businesses.

The works involve removal of the car park surface by mechanical means which will cause some noise at the beginning of the project. The new surface coat application will be applied by hand and therefore should be a quiet process.

The works are planned to take no longer than four weeks and must take place during fine weather.

Cllr James Byrnes, portfolio holder for transport and professional services, said: “The works being carried out at Chesil multi-storey demonstrates that the city council is investing in city centre car parks.

“The new surface will extend the life and quality of the structure as well as making the spaces more visually defined assisting those who are sight impaired.”

“The works are being undertaken in August as this is the period when use of the car park is at its lowest. Recent surveys carried out show that there is capacity with more than 99 spaces available daily at peak times.”

The nearby open air car park closed earlier this year and is being redeveloped for homes for the elderly.
