THEY helped him through his time of need and now he wants to give something back.

Richard Wheeler is holding a charity quiz night this weekend to raise funds for the Royal National Institute of Blind People.

It will be held at St John's House, Winchester on Sunday (July 10) at 7pm.

The former Kings’ School and Peter Symonds College student developed Leber’s Hereditary Optic Neuropathy in 2011. It affects the optic nerve and means he lost the majority of his vision.

Now he wants to raise vital funds for the charity.

"I'm raising money for the RNIB because in the five years since I've lost my eyesight, they have given me a huge amount of practical and emotional support," said Richard.

"I've been wanting to raise money for charity before but just didn't really know where to begin!"

The 29-year-old also conducted a street collection in Winchester on June 18, raising £408.47, and had a stall at the Hat Fair.

In 2013 he teamed up with charity Fixers – which supports young people to campaign on an issue that matters to them – and made a film called Seeing it Through My Eyes.

Tickets for the quiz are priced at £10 and includes refreshments and a strip of raffle tickets.

Teams are limited to eight members.
