A WINCHESTER road has been closed whilst work is carried out to build 52 new care homes.

Barfield Close shut yesterday for four weeks to allow contractors to work on the site of the former Chesil Street open air car park.

The road is used by motorists cutting through to the multi-storey car park and busses.

However, access to the Bar End Park and Ride will not be affected.

A spokesman for Winchester City Council said: "Contractors GallifordTry need to close the road in order to carry out the works safely because the storm soak-aways are in the centre of the carriageway.

"Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times."

The road is set to reopen on July 29.

The £15m scheme has been funded by Winchester city and Hampshire county councils, Homes and Community Agency and a local bequest.

Councillors said the homes, which will be build by autumn 2017, will benefit Winchester’s elderly, vulnerable residents for many years, helping to prevent emergency hospital admissions and enable early discharge to reduce bed-blocking.

A diversion to the multi-storey car park has been put in place via Chesil Street.
