POLICE are warning motorists to remain vigilant after a scammer flagged down a woman driver on a busy Hampshire motorway and demanded cash.

The woman was forced to hand over money after stopping to help a man on the M3 slip road at junction 11 for Twyford.

He had flagged her down from the hard shoulder, got into her car and demanded money for fuel.

She reluctantly handed him £80 before he bizarrely threw some jewellery at her and got out of the vehicle.

The woman was unharmed in the incident.

The man is described as dark skinned, around 5ft 7ins tall and of stocky build.

He wore a dark suit and a white shirt.

PC Neil Nancarrow said: “She stopped thinking she might be able to help, and she would like to warn other motorists of this type of scam.

Please be aware of this type of scam, using intimidation to get money, claiming to be for Fuel. Weare aware this type of tactic has been used in the past and other locations around the country.

Thankfully the lady was unharmed, she would like everyone to be made aware, of this type of scam.”

Anyone who recognises the man should contact police on 101.

If you see someone in need of help on the motorway, contact police on the same number.
