A JAW-dropping photo of a unicyclist with a fish bowl on his head has won a Hampshire photography competition.

Graham Barber’s picture of The Amazing Mr Fish at Winchester Hat Fair has gone on display at the city's rialway station.

It will be used to promote this year’s event, which runs from July 1-3.

Michelle Walker, artistic director of Hat Fair, said: “Graham’s photo really captured the joyful, riotous atmosphere of Hat Fair.”

Graham was joined at the unveiling ceremony on Friday with Michelle and Eddie Lata, Winchester station supervisor.

Winchester resident Graham explained how he took the winning photograph: “Hat Fair photography is always very challenging because, very often, the performers are ‘lost’ in the background crowds of people. I managed to get him isolated by lying uncomfortably on my back.

“He spotted me, rode straight at me and feigned a panicky loss of balance. I caught the image at that point, before rolling out of the way in case it was for real! I like the resultant image – showing the fun of Hat Fair, with the iconic cathedral depicted in the background.”

The competition was open to members of Winchester Photographic Society.

Hat Fair is Britain’s longest running festival of outdoor arts. It began in 1974 and now presents over 200 music, dance, theatre and circus acts in more than twenty locations around Winchester.
