A WINCHESTER care home has been told it must improve by a health watchdog.

Upton Grey Care Home which cares for up to 15 adults with learning disabilities or autism has been given “requires improvement” status by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Inspectors visited the Hampshire County Council run home in Upton Grey Close in January.

They noted concerns about staff being not fully trained to support people with their needs and recording errors in people’s medicine records.

The provider had also not carried out an assessment of people’s mental capacity to agree to care and treatment, this meant residents rights under the Mental Capacity Act may not be met.

Although staff made prompt referrals to healthcare professionals, some of the information required for this was not always completed as described as in their care plan.

A Hampshire County Council spokesperson said: “We take CQC inspection findings very seriously and have already developed a robust action plan to ensure improvements are made in the areas identified, which relate primarily to record keeping.

“We and staff at the home were pleased that the CQC found the quality of care and support provided to be good, and that residents and families had told them that the staff were kind and cared about the people they supported.

“Staff were also pleased that residents reported that they felt safe. The inspection findings and steps being taken to ensure improvements are made, have been shared with the residents’ families and carers.”
