IT is an end of an era.

After seven years of exhilarating fun and fundraising the organisers of Wacky Races in Kings Worthy have decided to call time on the event.

Hundreds of youngsters have enjoyed racing home-made non-powered go-karts down Race Hill, near the King Charles pub in Lovedon Lane.

Each year the event, organised by the Better Life charity has raised funds to house destitute families in Mongolia, and UK based projects like raising money for Naomi House.

Landlady at the King Charles, Sharron Bruty, said: “It is a real shame that it is finishing but I also think it is a lot of work for the people involved.”

“We hosted the closing ceremony and we did want to take it over but it was not that simple.”

Kings Worthy councillor Jane Rutter said: “I am sorry it is stopping, it was a great fun event for the village.”

The reasons for the Neither organisers Leigh McQueen nor Liza Bowers were available to discuss the reasons for the decision.

In a message on the Facebook page for the event, Ms Bowers and Ms McQueen, said: "We have had the most amazing time over the last seven years with an incredible team who have put so much time and effort into this event.

"However, after much deliberation and soul searching Liza and Leigh feel it is time to bring the Wacky Races to a close and leave on a high note.

"We have had such fun, excitement and laughter whilst raising money that has helped many local children and families suffering from cancer. These families have had wonderful theatre experiences in London, which will remain in their memories long after their precious children have passed away.

"A memory of good times together. We have also housed destitute families in Mongolia every year since 2005 which is something to be proud of.

"And all of this was possible through your help- So we wanted to thank you for your amazing creations, for your continued support over the years, your generosity, your creative skills, your design ingenuity, your inventiveness and lastly your courage.

"We do know how much the Wacky Races will be missed but all good things must come to an end."
