PARTS of the River Itchen near Winnall Moors Nature Reserve have undergone a transformation to make them more wildlife-friendly.

Phase one of the work started in summer 2015 near the River Park Leisure Centre transformed an artificial, sluggish canal into a more a naturally-meandering stream, improving the habitat for local flora and fauna. As a result wildlife like herons, water voles and brown trout have been encouraged into the heart of Winchester.

The three-year £45,000 scheme is funded by Winchester City Council and managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust Area Head of Conservation, Martin de Retuerto said: “Over the years much of the wildlife we associate with the world-famous River Itchen has been lost, or driven out - a real shame for a city known for its beauty and unique location.

“It's been great to see wildlife brought into the city by our previous work, and inspiring and exciting local people.”

The next phase will see similar works, including selected coppicing of streamside trees to allow more light on the bank margins, encouraging wetland plants to establish.

This will provide cover for water voles and also encourage colourful banded demoiselles or mayflies to use the streamside habitat.
