PEOPLE from across Hampshire will be in Winchester Cathedral on Sunday as part of national celebrations to mark Education Sunday.

The annual celebration recognises the contribution of those involved in education across the Winchester Diocese and celebrates the 175th anniversary of the city's university.

The service – presided over by the Bishop of Winchester, the Right Rev Tim Dakin features a welcome by Vice-Chancellor Professor Joy Carter; a reading by Chancellor Alan Titchmarsh and a sermon by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Liz Stuart; and singers, costumed dancers and performance artists from the University.

Prof Stuart said; “Winchester has a rich history in providing outstanding education for all ages. The university has been a really important part of this since its foundation in 1840 when it was originally established by the Church of England as the Winchester Diocesan Training School.

“The University of Winchester is deeply committed to providing excellent education, for anyone who can benefit from it – whatever their background. We undertake leading research that is having a real impact on communities here in the UK and around the world. We are thrilled to be involved with the Cathedral’s service recognising the transformational power of education and to recognise the hugely positive impact our staff and students are having on the world around them.”

The service starts at 10am. All welcome, no booking required.
