WINCHESTER City moved to within a point of the Southern One South & West play-off zone with a brilliant 2-1 win at second-placed North Leigh tonight.

They became the first visiting team to win a league game at Eynsham Park this season.

The Oxfordshire hosts bossed the opening stages and went ahead in the 12th minute when Zak Westlake’s header from a corner was adjudged to have crossed the line.

But with two minutes of the first half remaining, City pulled themselves back on terms when Zach Glasspool finished off a good move with a shot into the bottom corner.

Buoyed by that breakthrough, Winchester enjoyed the better of the second half and went close with a Dan Cann header with a quarter-of-an-hour to go.

The winner arrived in the 86th minute when prolific No10 Warren Bentley broke free to bury his 26th goal in 15 games this season.

Sixth-placed City have less than two days to recover before hosting Weymouth in the FA Trophy on Friday (7.45). The Terras were also in action last night, drawing 1-1 at Frome in the Southern Premier.

Sholing named a young squad featuring five debutants for their Russell Cotes Cup tie against AFC Totton - and managed to beat their Southern League visitors 4-2.

Luke Dempsey headed Totton in front, but back surged the Boatmen through Jake Hoole, Lucas Sabo, James Davis and Jamie Bulpitt before on-loan Eastleigh midfielder Jack Alexander netted the Stags’ second.

Bulpitt, an ex-Totton player, scored the goal of the night with a dipping volley from 30 yards and had another long-range cracker brilliantly tipped over by Stags keeper Steve Mowthorpe.

Totton’s Charlie Wagstaffe rattled the crossbar late on.

Sholing will now host Sydenhams Premier rivals Horndean in round two.

Tuesday’s Sydenhams Premier action saw Blackfield & Langley (Sam Lanahan, Rico Wilson) beat Cowes Sports 2-0, Andover Town (Danilo Cadete, Alex Dockree) win 2-1 at Bournemouth (Fawzi Saadi) and Lymington Town (Nick Magee 2, Harrison Weeks) triumph 3-1 at Hamworthy (Sam Bayston).
