BLACKFIELD & Langley’s 2-1 win at title favourites Salisbury raised eyebrows on the Sydenhams circuit – but not from the Watersiders themselves.

“We went there expecting to win, I don’t know what all the fuss is about,” shrugged co-assistant boss Chris Farrell. “We always felt we could get a result because we’re a good side.

“But there are lots of other good sides around and it’s ludicrous for anyone to believe that the league is done and dusted in October. There are plenty of clubs who could have a say. ”

Salisbury didn’t help themselves by having former Eastleigh and Winchester striker Sam Wilson sent off for two yellow cards with 35 minutes gone.

Four minutes later, Blackfield seized the lead when Liam Robinson turned in Rico Wilson’s cross.

Ten-man Salisbury hit back early in the second half with Steve Walker's looping a header home from a corner.

But Blackfield carried the greater threat as the half unfolded. Several one-on-ones went begging before Robinson finally made one count by rounding Whites ’keeper Gareth Barfoot with 12 minutes to go.

Although Wilson’s dismissal had an impact on proceedings, Farrell insists it should not detract from a fine Blackfield display.

“We had our strongest side out in a long time with Jake Rowley playing his first game since coming back from America and a young lad, Callum Cunniffe-Piley, making an outstanding debut at right-back,” he said.

“Callum’s come to us from Gosport’s development squad and you won’t see a better debut. He was superb. We had two 18-year-old full-backs, with Josh Buck on the other side, and they grew into the game.

“Fair play to Salisbury’s Matty Holmes. He said we were the most organised side they’d played this season.”

Blackfield entertain Cowes Sports in the league tomorrow night (Tuesday, 7.30pm) knowing they need to start stringing some victories together to pressure the teams at the top. They are currently ninth, 15 points adrift of leaders Salisbury with five games in hand.

“We’ve got to put a run together,” stressed Farrell. “We’ll have another strong side out tomorrow and we’ve still got two or three more to come back.

"Dan Munday was on the bench with shin splints and Hugh Dathan and Jesse Gould both have glandular fever.”
