GLEN Southam could not have picked a better time to join Basingstoke Town.

The former Eastleigh skipper and midfielder went straight into the side for Saturday’s big FA Cup fourth qualifying round tie at home to Torquay United.

And, thanks to another ex-Spitfire, two-goal Chris Flood, Basingstoke managed to clip the Gulls’ wings 3-0.

The Dragons, without a win in the National League South all season, outplayed their top-tier visitors in every department.

Will Salmon headed them in front from a third-minute corner and it was all about Flood damage from there on in as he struck in the 34th and 59th minutes.

Havant & Waterlooville also did themselves proud by salvaging a 3-3 home draw against National League high-fliers Cheltenham Town.

The Hawks fell 2-0 and 3-1 down, but hit back each time through Dan Strugnell, James Hayter and ex-Saint Matt Paterson to force a replay at Whaddon Road tomorrow (Tuesday).

Enraged Poole Town boss Tom Killick, meanwhile, has called on the FA to consider suspensions and financial sanctions against referees having blamed man-in-the-middle Andrew Laver for the Dolphins’ 2-0 exit at Whitehawk.

Will Spetch was controversially dismissed after 39 minutes on the back of a soft second yellow card before Luke Burbidge was denied a penalty moments after half-time with the score still 0-0.

To rub salt into Poole wounds, Whitehawk scored within a minute of that incident despite vehement appeals for an offside flag from the visitors.

Danny Mills, scorer of the Hawks' opener, then set up another for Sam Deering at the death.
