A FREE music festival organised by teenagers on a Winchester estate will take flight this weekend.

Stanmore Live aims to raise the aspirations of local youngsters by helping them produce their own event to professional standards.

Bands from across the south have been recruited to play at Saturday's event, seen as a natural successor to the popular Party in the Park.

There will be music across two stages, food, entertainment and community workshops from Blue Apple Theatre and the Firefly Theatre School.

Original songs from neighbourhood musicians, to be released for free online, expand upon last year's Postcard for Stanmore project, which celebrated the neighbourhood's history over the last two centuries.

Kari Dykes, Casey Prince and Matilda Brown, all 15, have been spreading flyers across Stanmore this week as part of the project.

Ms Prince, of Wavell Way, has been working for months as a young producer.

She said: "So far I have made new friends and am enjoying being part of the team. I really enjoy the sessions and they keep me motivated.

"It's going to be a really good family day - you can come with your family and every age will enjoy it because of the different genres we've got.

"I'd like to keep it going every year."

The lineup includes Basingstoke indie band FlashFires, Southampton rockers Insomnia and the Ollie West Band, from Headley.

Ward councillor Jamie Scott said: "We are all looking forward to Stanmore Live, as we do to any community event that brings people together. Stanmore Live will do just that, just as Party in the Park has done over the last few years."

The free event, in association with the Carroll Centre and Music4EveryoneUK.org, runs from 12pm to 6pm. A no alcohol policy is in operation.
