ONE of Winchester's most successful artists is returning to his home town to promote his newest album.

Singer/songwriter Frank Turner - whose well-known songs include the local favourite Wessex Boy - is playing at the small Railway Inn on Thursday, with his sixth album, Positive Songs for Negative People.

Tickets have been allocated by ballot. Successful applicants can buy a maximum of two tickets between 9am and 5pm on Wednesday.

Turner is also set to perform at Southampton Guildhall on November 6-7.

While writing the album, the folk singer also produced and published his first book. The Road Beneath My Feet was number one in the Saturday Times Best Seller list.

His newest album, produced through Xtra Mile Recordings and Polydor Records, is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Tape Deck Heart which came out in 2013.

It was made alongside his backing band, The Sleeping Souls, produced by Butch Walker in Nashville.

Mr Turner says: “I feel like this record is my definitive statement, a summation of the first five records. When a band makes a debut record, there’s a freshness and excitement to it that bands often lose as time goes by,” he adds. “I wanted to try and make a record with that young, exciting feel. Pretty much all of it is live. The end result is everything I wanted it to be.”

His UK headline tour starts on November 5.
