THE SOUTH African community in Winchester came together to celebrate Nelson Mandela.

Mandela Day, at Peter Symonds College, saw Mayor Cllr Angela Clear take to the podium to give a short history of the former president.

The South African flag was flying high when Zoleka Thara led the crowd by singing the national anthem.

There were children's activities, music from DJ Bambi and food from Shangai Papa and Rimjhim restaurants.

Ramadimetje Mashigo, director of Diaspora which ran the event, said: "The integration and bringing South Africans together was the order of the day.

"We were very pleased that everyone was treated to raffle prizes and treats. We're glad we could share a traditional South African meal with all of who joined us, and we are very thankful for all of your contributions to our hero's day - Nelson Mandela.

"A big thank you to the Winchester community, Churches Nightshelter and Theatre Royal for their involvement."

The event also included a Nelson Mandela Cup, with Amajita U18 team beating AFC Stoneham 5-3 in the final.
