WINCHESTER could soon have its own community-run climbing wall.

Entrepreneur Marty Orton wants to transform waste ground under the M3 overpass at Bar End into a climbing centre with a cafe and 'wild play area' for children.

Mr Orton, who moved to St Cross from London two years ago, is inviting public feedback on how the site should look and what facilities are needed.

He said: “Winchester really deserves and needs a climbing centre, one that welcomes children, families and young people. But it's not just about climbing, we want to see a space that really encourages children to play wild, is built sustainably and, importantly, run by the community it serves.

“Put simply, we're a committed local group who are campaigning to use this neglected land as a sustainable and fun community space. It promises adventure, indoor climbing, outdoor risky play for all ages, a community space for other activities, great locally sourced food and a decent coffee."

The scheme was backed by Winchester MP Steve Brine, who said: “I know that Winchester is one of the only cities in the country which does not have a climbing wall, and I am so impressed at Marty's dedication, passion and commitment which has seen him make it this far.

"The amazing thing about this site is that it's got eight acres of wilderness here, so we're wanting to look after that wilderness but at the same time use it for young people to be able to play outdoors."

Be Mountain is running consultations in September to create a masterplan for the site. Anyone with ideas or wants to help is asked to email marty@bemountain.co.uk.
