POLICE community support officers have said crime needs to be categorised in order of importance in the face of further cuts.

Winchester residents were told at the PACT meeting that while PSCOs would like to be in two places at once, they have been forced to prioritise criminal offences.

The remarks came amid complaints from residents who said they wanted to see more done about dangerous cyclists.

Reports emerged thick and fast from the 26 people who attended the meeting at Peter Symonds College, who said all too often they see cyclists weaving in-and-out of traffic, jumping red lights, riding with no lights and no helmets and travelling in twos limiting cars from overtaking on single-lane roads.

PSCO Gavin Cooper told the meeting: "It's a problem but it's a problem everywhere. If they are seen they will be dealt with. We have to use out time wisely. We wouldn't turn a blind eye but you won't see us standing to wait for it."

One resident reminded the audience of an incident a number of years ago whereby a woman was killed in Jewry Street when she was hit by a speeding cyclist.
