AS Winchester City prepare to cast their nets again for a new goalkeeper, last season’s No1 Gareth Barfoot has joined Salisbury.

The 33-year-old is one of two stoppers to have signed for the cathedral city club, along with Salisbury lad Monty George who has previously played for Bashley.

A former AFC Totton, Eastleigh and Gosport Borough ’keeper, Barfoot started last season at Blackfield & Langley before switching camps to their Sydenhams Premier Division rivals Winchester.

He made 31 appearances for City, helping them to runners-up spot, before moving on this summer.

Barfoot was replaced at the Denplan City Ground by Ryan Gosney, a member of City's 2011/12 Wessex title-winning squad.

But with Winchester gaining a late promotion to the Southern League, the former Folland Sports man will be upping sticks again because he cannot do the travelling, leaving City with a void to fill.

Salisbury boss Steve Claridge has no such problems. His two new glovemen fit perfectly into his policy of marrying youth with experience.

At 18, George is at the other end of the age scale to Barfoot. A product of Bishop’s Wordsworth School, he has this year won international honours representing England Schools.

“I want a blend of experienced pros and promising young players for the Wessex League,” Claridge explained.

“There will be times when we need the older heads and others when fresh, young talent is the order of the day.

“We now have two quality goalkeepers who will both serve us well, I am confident of that.”
