A WINCHESTER anti-austerity group is launching a street awareness campaign as a "friendly" alternative to protest.

Winchester People of Action will be in the city centre on Saturday to rally support and discuss the effects of public spending cuts.

A group statement said: "Whilst other organisations are protesting, we will be trying to move away from 'protest' and instead aim to engage with people. We will be operating in a friendly, open and engaging manner, with small satellite groups around the area and a central location for anyone that wishes to know more about the organisation, organisers, and the issues we are looking to raise and resolve."

Around 30 people joined WPA's protest with banners and placards in the city last month.
