FORMER Blackfield & Langley boss John Robson has been reunited with Neil Benson at Andover Town.

Having turned down the opportunity to become director of football at Blackfield, the vastly experienced Robson has been unveiled as Benson’s right-hand man at the Portway Stadium.

The pair are friends of many years’ standing and worked together at the old Salisbury City where Benson’s under-18 side fed through to Robson’s reserves.

Benson, who led Andover to 12th in their debut Sydenhams Premier season, explained: “John will be coming in to work directly with me as assistant manager, allowing Lewis Benson to concentrate on the coaching side.

“John will be involved frontline with me in all aspects of the decision-making of our senior squad.

“Having worked with John previously and as a long-term friend and contact in game, I am confident it will be a good working environment for us both.”

Benson doubles up as manager of the Sparsholt College Football Academy and believes Robson – who played professionally and managed the likes of Bashley, AFC Totton and Gosport Borough - can be an asset on that score too.

“There were some times last season when the extensive academy role I am responsible for overseeing demanded an additional experienced hand to be available at Andover Town which John will provide,” he said.

“And with the academy growing, we might see him involved in some areas there as well.

“John is a highly respected figure in football circles with a wealth of knowledge, experience and contacts that will be a huge asset to us at Andover Town.

“I am confident that this new appointment will create a buzz around the town. It is an indication of the intention of Andover Town to push on this coming season.”
