CYCLISTS in Kings Worthy are hoping to drum up enough support to get a cycle path into Winchester improved.

They want the route, from the Cart & Horses junction in King's Worthy to the Winnall roundabout, to be resurfaced so they can cycle into Winchester without negotiating the busy A34.

The Highways Agency, which is assessing the bid, is after more comments from residents to justify the scheme.

Daryll Kirley, from King's Worthy, said he used the footpath along the A34 to get to work in Winnall.

"The path is ideal because, being a trunk road, the traffic can be a little dangerous for cyclists. It is also quite a notorious black spot for traffic accidents.

"The cycle path would encourage people, who work in Winnall, to cycle to work. How many times have you sat at the M3 roundabout waiting to get out? It takes my friend 20 minutes to get home from work by car and it takes me 25 minutes at a leisurely rate!"

Martin Tod, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate, said: "Cyclists aren't given enough priority by either the county council or the Department of Transport.

"This would be a minor investment that would have a major benefit for local cycling.

"And by making it easier for people to cycle in and out of Winnall rather than using their cars, it would help the environment, too."
