THE new general manager of a Winchester venue is hoping to breathe a new lease of life into its events programme.

Chris Smith, who recently started at Winchester Guildhall, is planning to diversify the range of events offered to include music, comedy, theatre and film.

He said: "It’s an exciting time as we introduce changes to how we operate to increase the use of our beautiful building. There should be something for everyone at the Guildhall and my aim is to offer just that.

“Whilst remaining one of the most flexible and historic venues for weddings and private parties, I am also excited about the range of new events we plan to hold ourselves.”

Plans also include improvements to rooms, more licensed bars, extended menu options for banqueting and the Eighteen71 café, improved conference facilities, and new offers for weddings and parties.

Chris also wants to involve the community more throughout partnership events - the recent fundraiser to help those affected by two devastating earthquakes in Nepal is an early example.

Already in place for 2015 is the Winchester Festival of the Arts events in July, featuring some well-known names including Prof Robert Winston, Will Self, Greg Dyke and John Lloyd, Patrick Gale and Dan Snow.
