A NEW scheme has been launched to support cultural events and activities in the Winchester district.

The city council will award individual grants up to £2,000 on a first-come first-served basis, with a total of £10,000 available for this financial year.

The grants could be for festivals, major cultural events and/or arts activities which fit the aims and aspirations of Winchester District’s Cultural Strategy.

This includes encouraging economic prosperity, sustaining and developing visitor appeal, attracting new investment to the district and improving social well-being.

Kate Cloud, head of economy and arts, said: “At Winchester City Council we take great pride in the work we do to support our local economy.

“We recognise that creative industries are one of our key sectors, and we want to continue to support the sector as best we can. We are looking to either help make creative people sustainable business people, or encourage career progression within the creative sector.

“These new grants complement the arts advisory service we offer and other cultural activities across the city including the cultural network events.”

Cultural organisations must be based within the district and show evidence of need for grant funding.
