JOHN Robson reckons you only had to look at the Hampshire FA’s choice of man-of-the-match to realise Blackfield & Langley were worthy winners of the Russell Cotes Cup at Gang Warily.

Two years after lifting the Sydenhams Premier Division winners’ trophy, the Watersiders’ were back in the silverware with a 2-0 win over Horndean at Gang Warily.

Goals from Danny Young and Jake Rowley settled the issue, but it was the performance of Horndean goalkeeper Lyall Beazley that caught the eye of the county judging panel.

Robson said: “It was a well-deserved win.

“The fact that Lyall Beazley got the man-of-the-match award said it all.

“Lyall is a quality ’keeper and he was outstanding on the night.

“If it hadn’t been for him, it could have been ten. We played some very good football.”

Wideman Young took just three minutes to get the Watersiders’ noses in front and, after some heroics from Beazley, the home side tightened their grip when Rowley netted a second on the hour.

Horndean boss Dave Carter had no quibbles about the result, admitting the best team won on the night.

“Our goalkeeper kept us in the game in the first-half with a string of excellent one-on-one saves,” he said.
