A WORLD record set by Hampshire musicians has been beaten by a group halfway around the globe.
Last July Hampshire Music Foundation Education Hub saw 2,370 musicians gather in St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton to set the record for the largest ukulele ensemble.
Now more than 4,000 players in Tahiti, a south pacific island, have smashed it during its first International Ukulele Festival earlier this month.
Chairman of Hampshire County Council, Cllr Colin Davidovitz (pictured above), congratulated the record breakers.
“Our win was a great achievement while it lasted, and one which can only have inspired more young people to start their musical adventure by mastering the ukulele,” he said.
“I recall how remarkable it was to see our 2,370 participants last year, but to have more than 4,000 must have been something wonderful to witness.”
And there are more challengers for the title – today (April 18) the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center in Los Angeles will stage their attempt at its Ukulele Expo.
“I look forward to seeing whether they can do any better,” Cllr Davidovitz added.
