VILLAGERS are encouraging people to take more pride in the environment after collecting more than 25 sacks of rubbish in an hour.

Volunteers combed Sparsholt and found bags of rubbish, signs, metal, a gas cylinder and a full set of dining chairs overgrown by brambles.

Terry Dunn, of Woodman Road, is a member of the Ham Green Volunteers and took part in the clean-up.

He said: “Interestingly, we found several bags of cans and picnic stuff, all neatly tied up in carrier bags and then dumped by the roadside, rather than being taken home.

“All in all, it was a very satisfying morning's work but, one which would not be necessary if we had any pride in our environment.”

The clean-ups are done around four times a year.
