HAMPSHIRE scientists, gardeners, academics and community workers have been honoured as some of Britain’s finest servants.

Nigel Atkinson, Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, presented the British Empire Medal on behalf of the Queen at a ceremony earlier this month.

Among eight county recipients was Colin Miles, a Southampton University academic who was honoured for services to laboratory facilities.

The Eastleigh man, who has devoted more than 35 years to the university, providing technical support for teaching and research, said the award was “a great surprise”.

Meanwhile, David Stone, former head gardener at Romsey’s Mottisfont Abbey was given the medal for services to horticultural heritage after 36 years preserving an historic rose collection.

Other winners included Peter Camp, for services to the Alverstoke community, Peter Craddock for services to music, Pauline Holloway for services to maritime heritage, and Trevor Richards for services to biomedical research and animal welfare in research.

The list was completed by Jeanne Wilde, for services to the community in Burley, and Patricia Dobbin, for services to the Hampshire and Surrey Borders Riding for the Disabled Association.

The recipients were first named in the Queen’s New Year honours list.
