A MENTORING service helping Winchester’s jobless back to work is seeking extra volunteers weeks after opening due to high demand.

Winchester District Employment Mentoring launched this year in recognition of challenges facing the unemployed, including family trouble, cultural pressures, lack of skills or low self-esteem.

So many have come forward since its launch in February that operating charity Sova is seeking more helpers.

A spokesman for Winchester City Council, which funds the scheme, said volunteers can “help change people’s lives and make a real difference. “By volunteering you could help someone get their first apprenticeship or give someone who feels they are without prospects the confidence to realise long- held aspirations,” he said.

No qualification or experience is necessary but volunteers require commitment, listening and communication skills and a non-judgemental attitude. Travel costs are covered and all mentors receive supervision and training. The next course takes place on May 15, 22 and 29.
