THIS is the bizarre moment a Lib Dem official tried to stop the Hampshire Chronicle from taking pictures of its politicians in public.

Campaigns officer Tim Bearder put his hand in front of our camera at a photo call, blocking shots of Winchester parliamentary candidate Jackie Porter with a government minister.

These pictures show Mr Bearder, son of Lib Dem MEP Catherine Bearder, spotting Chronicle photographer Chris Moorhouse, walking towards him and blocking the lens with his hand. He later allowed candid shots to be taken.

Mr Bearder had organised the photo call for Cllr Porter and Lord Newby, deputy government chief whip in the House of Lords, who visited Winchester to discuss the Silver Hill scheme.

The former journalist, who is running for Oxford City Council in May, said he was trying to stop Mr Moorhouse from taking pictures of him. He denied trying to control photos of the politicians.

“It just seemed a bit ridiculous he wanted to shoot us before we were prepared to have a few shots,” he told the Chronicle.

“I walked towards him and he was taking a picture of me – and I said I didn't want that.

“It’s absolutely scandalous to imply that I was trying to control what was done on the day. I just said it was rude to be taking shots before you introduce yourself.”
