ALL Winchester City eyes will be on their old boss Graham Kemp tonight to see if he can do them a massive favour by derailing league leaders Petersfield Town at Love Lane.

Following Saturday’s 6-0 blitz of Bournemouth Poppies, Winchester have moved to within a point of Ian Saunders’ Sydenhams Premier pace-setters.

But City have played two games more than the table-topping Rams and, with just five matches left to catch them, they could do with a miracle from Kemp on his debut game in charge of the Bemerton Heath Harlequins.

Winchester’s director of football Dave Malone said: “Bemerton wouldn’t be expected to win there tonight, but I know Kempy will do his best – not for us, but for Bemerton.

“We couldn’t have done more than we have over the last six or seven games and we live in hope but, realistically, I can’t see us catching Petersfield with only five matches left.

“I think the best we can hope for is second place and, assuming nothing’s changed from last year when our ground was passed fit for promotion, getting the Southern League grading should be a formality.

“We’ve done all we can. If we’re in the league above next season, we are, and if we’re not, we’re not.”

City now hold the twin distinction of having scored the most goals in the Wessex top flight this season (103) and conceded the fewest (35).

Leading by a seventh-minute Warren Bentley header at half-time at Bournemouth, they exploded through the 100-goal barrier with a ruthless second-half show of finishing.

Jamie Thoroughgood steered City’s second through a tangle of legs on 49th minute and it was Chris Mason who brought up the ton for the season with a close-range finish from Zach Glasspool’s assist.

Dom Cope added number four in the 71st minute before substitute Danilo Cadete got in on the act.

Micky Hubbard saved the best ’til last, belting a 25-yard screamer into the top corner with three minutes remaining.

Just as pleasing for City as the six goals scored was their sixth clean sheet on the trot.
