CHILDREN welcomed the Mayor of Winchester for a spot of ping-pong last weekend.

Cllr Eileen Berry joined representatives of the South Wonston Table Tennis Club at The Westgate School to watch local paddle-wielding primary school children compete with their peers.

Six teams from five schools across the district battled it out in the Winchester Table Tennis League competition seeing South Wonston come in third, after the third round, beaten to the top by the Western Primary School B team and St Bede.

The event was held following some much needed funding from Winchester City Council which also helped to pay for new team kits.

The league resumes in the coming weeks which will see one team crowned winner from any one of the teams competing which also include Kings Worthy, the Western A team and Harestock.

Now South Wonston are looking for new talent to help continue the club's achievements.

Charlotte Smith, club secretary, said: "We’re keen to encourage youngsters to develop an interest in our sport from an early age.

Previously our club has nurtured England player, Tressa Armitage, and Ben Cawston currently ranked 19 in UK now we’re looking for the next generation to succeed them."
