THE Winchester Green Party has announced its candidate for the general election.

Dr Michael Wilks will bid to become MP for Winchester and Chandler’s Ford in May.

The former GP, now a forensic physician with the police, is set to campaign against the outsourcing of public services and “the failures of unregulated capitalism”.

He said: “The country is seeing a wholesale contracting-out of public services to private companies. “A lot of our taxation goes straight into private shareholders’ pockets. Teachers struggle to respond to the latest bright idea from government, and private companies running transport and utility services put profit ahead of customers. Look at the deterioration of local bus services here in Winchester.”

Dr Wilks, who unsuccessfully ran for Winchester City Council in 2012, will join incumbent Conservative MP Steve Brine, Liberal Democrat Jackie Porter, Labour’s Mark Chaloner and Ukip candidate Martin Lyon on May 7’s ballot.

He will be Winchester’s first Green candidate at a general election since 1987, when Julie Walker won 565 votes.
