THOSE familiar with Winchester city hotspots may have recognised one or two iconic settings in the new BBC adaptation of Wolf Hall.

The historical novel by English author Hilary Mantel has been rejigged for a television drama chronicling the rise of Thomas Cromwell – the son of a humble blacksmith who eventually became Henry VIII’s chief minister.

Well-kept Tudor relics have been intrinsic during the film-making process which has meant Winchester has seen a surge in some of its more famous locations, including the Hospital of St Cross, the Great Hall and Winchester Cathedral.

In fact, so popular is the new programme, Winchester City Council has combined forces with the Winchester Area Tourist Guides Association to redevelop Tudor trails across the city.

The route which follows renowned landmarks is free to download and will provide historical information.

A special Wolf Hall tourist guide has also been produced that links the Tudor landmarks with filming locations.

Cllr Rob Humby, leader of Winchester City Council and portfolio holder for tourism, said: “We have seen an increase in film location enquiries in Winchester - with our colleagues at Film Hampshire contacting council officers regularly with information about the requirements of film companies.

“In addition to Wolf Hall, we have also had Benedict Cumberbatch spotted filming The Hollow Crown and before that Les Misérables was shot in College Street starring Russell Crowe.

“We’re delighted that the destination is becoming a location of choice for so many film companies. It supports our tourist attractions and also reflects the fact that our well-preserved cityscape is both beautiful to look at and a lasting legacy of the past.”

Other filmed locations close to the city include Mottisfont Abbey, Bishop’s Waltham Palace and, further afield, parts of Portsmouth – home to Henry VIII’s ill-fated ship the Mary Rose.

Catriona Morley, clerk and general manger of the Hospital of St Cross, said: “When we were approached by the BBC regarding the filming of Wolf Hall we were only too pleased to help. “The Hospital’s gardens were used for key archery scenes with Clare Foy and filming with Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance.

“Being involved in a project like this is a reminder of just how much history this medieval almshouse has witnessed – Philip II of Spain stayed here on the way to his wedding with Mary Tudor,” she added. “We have had so much interest in the site since the filming which helps us spread the message about what we have to see and do here.”
