A TELEVISION broadcast outside Winchester Guildhall was interrupted last night as 40 litres of fuel leaked onto The Broadway.

A Mercedes van belonging to BBC film crews started leaking diesel at around 9.40pm last night, covering parts of the car park by King Alfred's statue.

Firefighters spent 45 minutes mopping up the mess using Environment Agency absorbency pads.

Watch manager Dan Joslin said: "They noticed it just before they went on air and we worked around them."

BBC reporter Roger Finn was due to broadcast live from outside the Guildhall after a High Court judge ruled that Winchester City Council acted unlawfully over the Silver Hill scheme.

The Highways Agency took over the road for final maintenance at 11.20pm.
