SHOLING made a dignified exit from the Red Insure Cup last night, knocked out 3-0 at Southern Premier promotion seekers Poole Town.

The Boatmen conceded all three in the first half, but the South & West underdogs played their part in a well contested Tatnam tie.

Ex-AFC Totton forward Luke Roberts opened the scoring in the 12th minute and that lead was doubled just before the half-hour mark by Dolphins’ new AFC Bournemouth loan signing Joe Quigley.

Sholing conceded again on 44 minutes when centre-back Dan Miller deflected the ball into his own net.

The Boatmen had their chances, most notably when Barry Mason’s delivery ran enticingly across the six-yard box, but no one could get on the end of it.

“Poole had a lot of possession, but we did well and should have scored at least two,” summed up Sholing boss Dave Diaper.

Pete Castle got through another 70 minutes on his return from long-term injury, this time in his customary centre-half role. “Pete was aching a bit afterwards, but he’s OK,” added Diaper.

Sholing face more Dorset opposition on Saturday, at home to Wimborne Town in the league. The Magpies last night beat Fleet Town 3-1 through Jamie Davidson, Sam Griffin and Chris Wilcox.
