CHRIS Marwood marked his Totton & Eling comeback with two goals at Folland Sports on Saturday.

But even though the experienced targetman posed a constant threat to the Planemakers’ patched-up defence, it was not enough to rescue the Sydenhams Premier back markers from an 18th league defeat.

Reflecting on Follands’ 5-2 victory, boss Danny Bowers admitted: “Chris was a threat to us all game, especially as we had no recognised centre-halves. James Roden was out with a foot injury, Callum Brockway spent a few days in hospital after falling and hitting a wall and both Matt Burt and Iain Calder were suspended.

“Ollie Warren and Will Harris stepped in and did well. The two goals we conceded were not their fault – one was a penalty and one was a wonder goal.”

Title hopefuls Follands got off to a perfect start, leading with a Ryan Long penalty after Ashley Jarvis had been pulled down with just three minutes gone.

But, if anything, the goal came too soon and it wasn’t until midway through the first half that the Planemakers stamped their class on proceedings with the excellent Jamie Barron first setting up Long for a second before sending Wayne Boud on his way to round the ’keeper and score.

With half-time approaching Totton earned a penalty of their own for an ill-timed Ryan Fuller tackle and Marwood stepped up to make it 3-1.

And, despite Bowers’ pleas for a strong start to the second half, Follands promptly conceded again when they sloppily gave the ball away and the alert Marwood smartly lobbed Ryan Gosney from distance.

“Totton are at the bottom and fighting for their lives and for the next ten or 15 minutes they really had a go,” said Bowers. “All the play was in our half, not theirs.

“But then Ryan (Long) has played in Ash (Jarvis) who’s twisted inside the box and found the roof of the net and that fourth goal killed it.

“We scored again at the death when Jamie Barron unselfishly squared the ball to Wayne Boud who slotted in from close range.

“It was nice to see our front three all scoring. That’s six goals for Ryan Long in his last three league games. It’s nice to have him back and hopefully we’ll go to Winchester City on Saturday in good stead.”
