FIREFIGHTERS were called to tackle a small fire at an historic Winchester building.

A crew of five Winchester firefighters attended a chimney fire at the Chesil Rectory yesterday at around 11.45am.

They were called out after neighbours alerted them to the amount of smoke coming from the chimney and left after approximately an hour.

Restaurant manager Jess Liddiard said: “Everything yesterday was absolutely fine. It was just a little problem and was sorted out very efficiently.

“We had a service delay of about half and hour but it’s just one of those things; the building is quite old and these things happen.”

Mark Dodd, director, said: “We lit the normal fire and it was really smokey. Some people called the fire brigade so they just checked the flue but there was no fire as such.”
