IT is the annual competition packed with fun and flavour and this year publicans are celebrating after raising nearly £500 for charity.

The pie competition at the Hyde Tavern, in Hyde Street, saw 27 entries and Ian Bell scooped the gong for best pie with his hare creation.

Caroline Botte and Hannah Rose were runners up with a Tartiflette and Cornish pasty.

Hyde residents Orah Bradshaw and Jade Duckett judged the competition, which raised £464 for Winchester Churches Nightshelter.

Janet Theodore, landlady, said: “It was great fun. The amount we raised is amazing for £2 a slice. We also had mash and gravy.

“We are hoping to release a pie book, with the best pies from the past five years. Hopefully that will be out before Christmas.”

The proceeds from the book will also be donated to charity.
