WINCHESTER University is hosting a free concert for residents affected by noise and anti-social behaviour on a city estate.

Long-standing unrest between residents and students in Stanmore has resurfaced in recent weeks as campaigners urge civic chiefs to restrict student housing.

The university’s foundation music department is inviting residents to enjoy its autumn showcase on Tuesday as one of many steps being taken to ease tensions.

But the concert will clash with a presentation by the Student Union outlining its community projects to campaigners.

Hannah Curtain, creative director, said: “We are acutely aware that there are issues with our neighbours in Stanmore and Foundation Music would like to do something to help.”

“Our students would like to give something back to the residents of Stanmore, where many of them live, so we’re inviting them to come along and enjoy a fantastic evening of music.”

Performers include the Mixed Outfit Orchestra, The King Alfred Singers, African Drumming Ensembles and That Dixie Feeling.

Doors open at The Stripe, Sparkford Road, at 6.45pm ahead of a 7pm start. Entry is free for Stanmore residents who can provide a recent utility bill.

The presentation and meeting starts at 6.30pm in The Vault.
