RADIO 2 DJ Chris Evans is sending over 1,300 people from Winchester to the 2014 Children in Need festival Carfest.

The 1,350 dinner ladies, parents and children will get on the 26 coaches at their Winchester school to join the compere later this year.

The One Show presenter joined children at Weeke Primary School yesterday after he was contacted by pupil Tobey Ferguson during his show Kids for a Fanfare.

Tobey called Chris to tell him the school’s goal posts had been vandalised some time ago and they were not able to score any goals due to the broken ones being too small.

He compared the ones they had to being the same size as a fridge.

Children had been using their jumpers and even lunchboxes as makeshift posts before Mr Evans managed to raise donations.

But he said it was Tobey’s sweet plea that got the phone ringing off the hook with people offering money, posts and even uniforms.

“He called me and I said what was the score and then he said it was 0-0 because our goals are so small and the old ones got vandalised,” Mr Evans said. “He said it would have been a much higher scoring match.

“I said that's terrible and it's not fair. I said we have got to do something about it but by the time I tried to do something the phone wouldn't stop ringing. Within a matter of minutes hundreds of people called in offering money.”

Tobey, who played for the school team for the first time on Monday, said he was lucky the phone lines were quite quiet and responded to Chris’s request for calls.

“I don't know what to say," Tobey said. “I didn't think it would get this far. Now we can play a proper game of football.”

Tobey was joined by his mum and dad and his granddad Trevor – brother to Saints legend and 1966 World Cup player Terry Paine.

“He would be so proud,” Tobey added. “He would be thrilled to see Chris!”

In line with his Children in Need fundraising Mr Evans told the school he would send them all to CarFest South this year and that Tobey would be opening a special mini fest called Goalfest.

He announced on the radio this morning that it was not only children who were invited but all the staff and parents of the school as well.

The £600 goal posts were donated by Mark Harrod after he heard Tobey's phone call. His colleague Pete Robson took the call from the radio show researchers.

“I just heard Tobey when he phoned and I thought, we can do something about that,” Mr Robson said. “It just tugged on everyone's heart strings.”
