HAMPSHIRE police say 46 drivers have been caught this week using their phones behind the wheel.

It comes as part of a regional week-long crackdown targeting those putting lives at risk.

Hampshire police have teamed up with Thames Valley and the Isle of Wight forces for the operation.

In total 15,952 drivers were caught using handheld phones and other electronic devices across the three counties between March 31 and April 1 last year.

The Hampshire figure was 5,280.
