THE MOST eminent archaeologist of his generation who has worked extensively in Hampshire has been honoured with a CBE.

Prof Martin Biddle who led the ground-breaking excavations in Winchester city centre in the 1960s and 70s received the award from the Duke of Cambridge at Windsor Castle.

Prof Biddle received his award for 'services to archaeology'.

He is still working on the resulting from those digs, which have been widely hailed as among the most important of the 20th century.
