JAMIE Musselwhite scored twice in the FA Vase on Saturday, proving that Blackfield & Langley’s loss is very much AFC Portchester’s gain.

Musselwhite, who left Blackfield after moving house to Hayling Island, has wasted no time getting back in the scoring groove at Wicor Rec.

Since returning to Portchester he has plundered four goals in three games, following up his brace against Verwood in the league with another in Saturday’s 2-1 second qualifying round win over Hamworthy United.

The Hammers inflicted the first blow on 15 minutes when Greg Horlock glanced home an inswinging free-kick.

But Portchester soon levelled with Rob Evans crossing for Musselwhite to net a trademark bullet header.

It remained that way until the dying moments when Andy Rinomhota was hacked down in the box. The offender was shown a straight red and Musselwhite netted the penalty.

Victorious boss Graham Rix said: “We thoroughly deserved to win, it was just a question of getting that second goal. If we’d got it earlier, I think we’d have gone on to get more.”

Portchester’s neighbours Fareham progressed 1-0 at the expense of Sydenhams Premier high-fliers Petersfield Town.

With the Cams Alders tie ticking towards extra-time, Fareham substitute Jordan Neal emerged as the hero of the hour, calmly slotting home after excellent work by debutant James Rolfe. It ended a run of ten straight wins in all competitions for Petersfield.

Portchester have drawn a home tie against Reading Town in the first round proper, while Fareham travel to Verwood.

Wessex top-dogs Moneyfields bowed out 4-3 at Bemerton Heath Harlequins, who will now entertain Cowes Sports.

Moneys were on a ten-match unbeaten run, including a 2-0 defeat of Harlequins in the league, but the boot was on the other foot this time. The Portsmouth side had young striker Alfie Rutherford dismissed in a high-scoring battle.
