PETERSFIELD Town staged a remarkable turnaround to strengthen their grip on the Sydenhams Wessex Premier top spot.

The Rams were trailing to a 54th-minute Danny Urry goal heading into stoppage time at Andover Town.

But they equalised on 90 minutes and then miraculously summoned up a winner five minutes into stoppage time.

Former VTFC goal ace Warren Hunt levelled matters with a thumping header from the edge of the six-yard box and, with the seconds ticking down, Ash Howes got the final touch amid a goalmouth scramble to spark wild celebrations from the visitors.

Rating it his greatest ever comeback as Rams boss, Ian Saunders said of the 2-1 win: “Petersfield have staged some pretty remarkable comebacks since I’ve been manager, but none go close to topping this turnaround of fortunes.”

But he admitted: “Looking back at the first half it is difficult to see why we needed a dramatic, late fightback as we were so in control of the game. The football we played in the opening 45 minutes was the best I’ve seen during my time at Love Lane.”

The win keeps Petersfield two points clear of Moneyfields – who crushed Christchurch 4-0 at Hurn Bridge – and third-placed Brockenhurst.
