WINCHESTER City hope wing wizard Mike McEnery can conjure up some more magic against his old club Newport IoW in the FA Cup second qualifying round at the Denplan City Ground tomorrow.

McEnery scored twice against the Islanders in City’s 3-1 league win last Saturday, but missed Tuesday’s 1-0 setback at Bemerton due to work commitments.

Without him, Winchester endured a frustrating night at Western Way, creating chances galore as they looked to respond to Graham Mankin’s 17th-minute penalty, but failing miserably to put them away.

Co-boss Danny Robinson is not about to push the panic button, however.

Winchester are, after all, the Sydenhams Premier’s joint top scorers with 26 goals and, until Tuesday’s blank, had scored in every game.

“I’d be more worried if we weren’t making chances,” said Robinson. “I’m not going to berate our strikers because nine times out of ten they do score.

“Tuesday was a bit of reality check and it’s brought us down to earth for the FA Cup.

“The fact we beat Newport in the league means nothing now because Newport won on Tuesday (1-0 against Verwood) and we’ve lost. The Cup is completely different.

“Tomorrow’s a big occasion for us – and it would help if we could put the ball in the net!”

City were due to assess Stuart Green in training last night after the midfielder sat out the Bemerton game with groin trouble.

Newport’s winner against Verwood was scored by debutant Max Draper, a recent signing from Cowes Sports.
