UNLESS Folland Sports buck up their ideas, Southern Leaguers Frome Town might as well bring a cricket scoreboard with them to Hamble for tomorrow’s FA Cup second qualifying round tie.

So says Planemakers boss Danny Bowers who fears an embarrassing outcome at Follands Park if there is any repeat of Tuesday’s “unacceptable” 3-0 defeat at Blackfield & Langley in the Sydenhams Premier Division.

Follands went into that game on a high of six straight league and cup wins, but it was all over by half-time as Jake Rowley (2) and Danny Young effectively ended it as a contest.

“We were absolutely awful and conceded three terrible goals, all down to massive individual mistakes,” said Bowers.

“We were much improved in the second half, but the game was won by then and Blackfield didn’t need to do any more.

“We had three half shots in the whole game and that’s not acceptable.

“Yes, we had no Ryan Fuller (injured) or Ryan Long (working), but that’s just excuses. Blackfield had people out too. The bottom line is we weren’t good enough.”

Bowers had been away for Saturday’s 2-1 league win at Fawley but said: “Dave (Lewis, assistant boss) told me we were poor and Fawley hit the woodwork several times, so this had been coming. We’d just been papering over the cracks.

“Individual errors exposed us on Tuesday. You wouldn’t see mistakes like that from a 25-stone, half-drunk fella playing Sunday parks football.”

Bowers is also worried about Follands’ lack of potency up front.

“Last year we were scoring goals for fun, but this year we don’t look like it even though we’ve got quality centre-forwards,” he said. “I won’t be scared of making changes. Stuart Gates has played another 20 minutes and Richard Gregory’s back from holiday in Dubai.

“We’ve got Ryan Long available tomorrow, which is like having three players back, but Ryan Fuller, who already had an ankle injury, fell and twisted his knee outside football, so we may have to play young midfielder Matt Casey at right-back again.

“Matt was one of the pluses the other night.”

Frome sit 18th in the Southern Premier following Tuesday’s 2-1 loss at Truro.

But the Robins beat fancied Cambridge City 2-1 last Saturday, so are not to be underestimated.

“If we turn up we’ve got a chance, but if we’re anything like Tuesday we’re on a hiding to nothing,” said Bowers.

“One thing my players are is honest, though, and they know when they’ve let themselves down.

“I just hope they take it on board and put it right. When we do go out of the FA Cup, I want us to go out fighting and not with a whimper.”
