A COMPROMISE has been reached between a mother and school over the colour of her daughter’s hair.

Usually brunette, Lydia Newberry faced days of isolation and was asked to leave on her first day back after the summer holidays, after dying her fringe blonde.

Now senior staff at Henry Beaufort and the 14-year-old’s mother, Ruth Newberry, have agreed she does not have to dye it back, but must wear it in a style that hides as much blonde hair as possible.

Mrs Newberry, a carer, of Up Somborne, said: “It will be quite hard to cover it up but we will do our best.”

When asked if leaving her daughter’s hair unchanged could cause further problems in her GCSE years, she said it “could be possible”.

Mrs Newberry said that the Harestock school is changing its safeguarding policy after confusion about whose care the Year 10 pupil was in on September 4, when she ended up in Winchester with no money to get home.

Sue Hearle, headteacher, declined to give further comment.
